Swedish violist Göran Fröst has established himself as one of the most active violists of his generation as well as a composer. His career has been a journey in a diversity of styles playing as a soloist and chamber musician in some of the worlds most prominent concert halls as well as working as principal violist in high profile orchestras.

His projects are always seeking to break new ground for classical music performance and has been greatly praised by press nationally and internationally. He is a strong advocate for the viola as a unique solo voice and is constantly working to expand the repertoire for his instrument.

Biography

Göran Fröst is most one of the most interesting scandinavian violists of today. Performances as soloist and chamber musician has taken him to some of the most prominent concert halls throughout Europe and Japan such as Muziekgebouw Amsterdam, Bunka Kaikan Tokyo and Royal Albert Hall London. His projects are always seeking to break new ground for the classical music concert and lately his performance “One hour of Night” together with guitarist Jacob Kellerman. As chamber musician Göran has also performed and collaborated with such admired musicians as Nobuko Imai, Christian Poltera, Antje Withaas and Maxim Rysanov.

The album Nordic Connections, Daphne Records (2020) marks Görans debut as a recording artist in his own name and has rendered great appreciation by the press. It contains the world premiere recording of Ludvig Normans sonata for viola and piano and Edvart Griegs c-minor sonata for violin and piano in version for viola together with pianist Oskar Ekberg as well as the viola concerto by Gösta Nystroem with Swedish Chamber Orchestra and conductor Clemens Schuldt.

Göran is a keen interpreter of contemporary repertoire and has had many pieces written for him. Since 2007 he has been a member of KammarensembleN. Sweden’s leading ensemble for contemporary music. As part of this ensemble he has contributed to numerous recordings, premieres and tours in the field of contemporary music.

The compositions and arrangements by Göran Fröst renders more and more recognition and have been performed all over the world by orchestras such as Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Australian Chamber Orchestra and Amsterdam Sinfonietta. 

The collaboration with his brother Martin Fröst has proved to be a fruitful one with arrangements of Brahms Hungarian dances for Clarinet and Orchestra and the completion of Three Klezmer Dances, played and appreciated all over the world. Together with Martin he has developed the concept conducting choreography, a completely new form of stage performance. Premiered in the two pieces DClipse April 2013 and DTangled August 2013.

As an orchestra musician Göran regularly works with Chamber Orchestra of Europe. 2011-2014 he was principal violist in BBC National Orchestra of Wales and since 2016 he is the principal violist in Swedish Chamber Orchestra. Göran has since 2011 been a distinguished viola teacher and chamber music coach at the Royal university college of music Stockholm.
